neutron But based on that logic it was designed to run that and nothing else so it's inevitable that it will suffer quality drops when emulating a player that was designed with the sole purpose of playing back video. You can probably design a HTPC that will have playback as good as a player, but why waste the time, money and effort when you can buy a player...

doremi Well one could argue that standalone players are dumbed down computers, they work on the same principal, but they sacrifice diversity for price, I'm sure with the right configuration you can match a traditional system with a HTPC.

jvc I prefer the traditional player. Everything in my system works from my one remote, and as was stated, the quality is better. I have an HTPC of sorts. It has 5.1 surround hooked up, but no tv or dvr type stuff. It's a stand alone in another room. I can watch movies in surround sound on it. It also plays DVD-Audio discs, but I usually play them on my main system (much better quality).

scratch I bought my blu-ray player back when standalone players were cheaper than buying an optical blu-ray drive for the pc, plus I don't want to have to start the pc every time I want to watch a movie, this way I pop in the disc and presto.

beat I prefer a traditional player in my opinion the playback quality is slightly better and there are additional factors like noise from the coolers in a pc. Don't get me wrong I watch movies on my laptop too, but for maximum viewing pleasure I'll stick with my player and flat screen.

HTPC or Traditional player?

I was wondering what everybody was leaning towards, I myself prefer a HTPC to a traditional player, mainly because it's more customizable and I can set it up anyway I wish, how about you?
