jvc No dvds have 7.1 surround. But several blu ray movies do.
If you have a 7.1 system, one of the DSP modes is Dolby Pro Logic IIx. I listen to my tv using that mode. So, my tv shows are in 7.1 simulated surround. Sounds better than stereo.........

beat Yup that's another thing from what I noticed most dvd's are encoded with 5.1 so if you have a 7.1 setup, two speakers are not going to have sound, or will have some distorted piece of sound.

davidkay Remember that there's a difference between channels and speakers. Dolby EX and DTS ES support up to 7 full range audio channels and a LFE channel. You could have an 11.5 home theater if you wanted to, but you would have multiple speakers on a single audio channel that way.

The newest "format" is Dolby Pro-Logic IIz, which is essentially just a copy of the old Yamaha presence speaker system. I say "format" because it uses DSP to choose what to send to the height speakers. There are no DVDs or BR discs encoded with a DPL-IIz soundtrack.

beat I see that almost everything has been explained, I would also like to add that you should stick with a better 5.1 setup, it will sound much better than what you would get if you bought a cheaper 7.1 setup.

doremi I was always under the impression that surround sound did just that, it made it sound like the noises were coming from all directions to make it more realistic. In this regard the more channels the more it can emulate how it would sound in reality.

jvc 7.1 is not a sound quality, to hear a difference in. It's the number of channels the soundtrack was mixed into. Can you hear a difference between 7.1 and 5.1 surround? Yes, though it will be subtle in most cases. The surround speakers (rear in 5.1), and especially the surround back speakers (6th & 7th speakers in 7.1) are mainly for the subtle, ambient sounds. The main sounds from a movie will come from the front three speakers and sub. Actual sound quality is dependent mostly on your equipment, and mainly your speakers.

What's the max surround sound standard?

I know of 7.1 channels, but I'm sure there are more than that. Also do you actually hear the difference or is it an increase in volume only and not actual sound quality?
