Default Replacement for Blu-Ray

Seeing how quickly disc formats are evolving, what do you think in a few years time will replace Blu-Ray?

Or will manufacturers find other ways to pack more features on for example writing to discs vertically as well as horizontally.

They're trying to make streaming the next big thing. But there's too many people in this country that don't have access to broadband, so streaming is out of the question for these people. If they can't reach the majority of people, it won't become mainstream. Blu ray will probably be around for a long time. They may can go higher than 1080p for the video, but I don't know that the human eye can see the difference anyway.

As far as writing to discs vertically, they already do that. It's my understanding that blu ray discs have 3-4 layers or more of info. That's how they get so much on the disc. DVDs were only dual layer.

Actually blu-ray has a bleak future, there are two replacements I know of. One is holographic storage which has the theoretical limit of 1.6TB of data and transfer speeds of 120MB/s and blu-violet ultrafast pulsed semiconductor laser, try saying that fast five times, which can store around 500gb of data on one layer.

I'm kind of baffled by the idea of storing information vertically and using holographs. I suppose it's not essential to fully understand this technology but I'd like to try to keep up!

I personally don't own a Blu-Ray player so I'm not too sure. I keep hearing that soon there will be no need for DVDs or Blue-Ray etc, because everything is going to be on memory chips. I'm not sure though.

Gosh, I don't even have a blue-ray player, I have only just got used to DVD'S. My favourite films are still showcased as videos. Not sure what I will do when the player breaks down. I suppose somewhere there is someone who can fix them.

Blu-Ray's never really caught one as much as DVD's did, but when the new technologies appear price's will surely drop to accommodate the market and that might result in an upsurge for Blu-Ray's, who knows.

There was an article awhile back that said blu rays outsold dvds in the same time period.
Meaning, from the time that dvds became available, up to the first year (I think), in that same time period for blu rays (from the time that they became available, up to the first year), the blu rays outsold dvds. Of course, dvds have been around a lot longer now, so there are many more of them. But blu ray players actually caught on with the public quicker than dvds did.

Blu ray movies are selling pretty well too, I think. Though it's not me buying many. I have over a 1000 dvds, but only 42 blu ray movies. That number will rise a little by Christmas...........
