Default SCORE!

Well the Muncie City wide garage sale was today which is always fun because you can see all 100 of your neighbors (the whole town) at once. The boy and I have a tradition of going with the neighbor and his kid just to goof around and have an AWESOME Chicago hot dog (drug thru the garden). A guy that lives here runs a hot-dog stand.

In the final round I was spacing out but heard Dad, Dad, Dad, DAD! LOOK!

And behold! A set of Cerwin Vega D3's with rotted surrounds!

Now, my first set of speakers were Minimus 7's (wish I still had them) then I mowed my ass off to get a spanking new set of Yamaha NS-A8.2's. Mom and dad for some dumb fucking reason had a set of Cerwin Vega D3's. Well the remodel of the living room happened and dad offered to trade me the D3's for the Yamahas because they looked WAY better in there and were not as large. Now I could be the terror of the neighborhood. Did not sound as good but ungodly loud. I then traded them just days before I went to school for a set of a/d/s 570's, which I still have, to reduce size for the dorm room. I always thought it would be cool to have another set of Cerwin Vegas for kicking around, but they still fetch a price on ebay, and honestly they will probably get passed down to my son. But DAMN, the same fucking set I had as a kid!

Anyway, I asked the guy how much and he said 20 bucks, we hooked them up, everything worked and I said, "I dunno those woofers are pretty ratty, would you take 10 bucks?"

10 dollars later......

Re-foam kits are already ordered and Van Halen 1984 is in the warm-up box.

Cerwin Vegas should be part of any person's audio puberty

Cast woofers, a trademark, no suprise

A Not so sealed back midrange! It's got 2 holes in the "basket" with aperiodic material in the holes.... neato.

Then I grumbled as I was going to pop the crossovers out because i had planned to replace the Lytic caps which I assumed were in there with film/foil. I mean srsly, 20 year old vegas you KNOW have been abused. My ass cheeks clapped when I saw this!

Another shot of the crossover

Did not take pics of the tweets, must have been the beer in me (after city-wide garage sale is city-wide beer-fest.)

Every individual driver swept fine but the woofers, for obviious reasons, I'll sweep them when I re-foam them this week.

Trivia time

I can't remember the model for the EQ but Cerwin sold an EQ for these, the brochure came in every D-series box, it was basically a vented box EQ with a HPF, nothing on the top end. i want one, they extended the response to the mid-low 20's and provided driver protection.

Anyone remember the model of the EQ?

Nice Chad!

I grew up with a pair of Avid 103-W speakers that look very similar to those CerwinVegas. I wish I could find a pair now. My mom gave them away

EDIT: These

They have aluminum added around the corners and I BELIEVE have been painted black, even the grille, to make them for portable use. I don't believe there was a black version available, we will see tonight.... I will need to find a color pic of some originals so I can match the old-skool paint color and see what color the grille really was. I want to restore them to their original state pending all the drivers are good. Guess I better get the beer fridge cooled down.
