Elemental Designs 13Av.2 Production Pics Released

Some of you probably stayed up until midnight like I did last night to see the new 13Av.2 pictures as they were released on the ED website. I for one like the look of the new basket, and I'm digging the gloss black powdercoat finish.

More pics after the jump.

The first customers should start receiving their 13Av.2's in mid-January. I know they have some HT applications planned for this subwoofer, but as usual the ED guys are tight lipped about any future products.

For some funny commentary, keep hitting the refresh button on the Elemental Designs front page and look under the 13Av.2 picture.

If I were to own this sub, it would be the only time I've desired to invert a sub. I've never seen a cone/surround so ugly.

Recommended box size is smaller than I expected. Lukas getting one?

I'm thinking a pair of these ported in the house would get downright nasty off of 2400 watts. :)

I'm sure they would. If I was in a house, I'd have a hard time not using horns, but these things would probably be crazy loud.

Where do you live again? :P

I love it,,, but I do wonder why they changed the tall thin surround in the prototype to the wide fat surround?

Holy top plate batman

While I'm sure this thing is powerful enough to move furniture, I don't think I'd really want it in a home application. There aren't any "dB drag races" for home theaters (at least as far as I'm aware), and I'd like at least a modicum of transient response and tonality, rather than just ridiculous power. I'll take a REL in black, thanks.

this thing is made for sealed boxes, not ported. I have a TC sounds sub that looks like this ED was designed after and it performs wonderfully in a sealed box.

I would bet that because of the underhung motor design that this sub sounds great. I have an older underhung subwoofer a Crystal CMP 12 and it is the most accurate sub I have ever heard, even more so then my IDQ 12. Too bad companies don't make more underhung subs, because of the huge top plate required they are expensive to manufacture.

the move from the older surround prototype was based on weight. Really we wanted to keep moving mass in a really tight realm. the original high roll rubber surround just had a pretty signifigant compliance shift and weight. Going with this design allowed a drastic increase in efficiency and weight loss.

Measurably the new surround means more output due to efficiency. With the intended 1200-1500 watts it was the way to go. The other surround required quite a bit more power for the same output #'s.

Really the idea here isn't to shake furniture but with this much displacement and head room the suspension doesn't really need to impeded excursion at all. In the end you've got a incredibly linear motor surround and suspension design that is designed to let it breathe instead of hinder the motor potential.

It's expensive as hell to do it this way but being factory direct has a big advantage that we can actually sell it for affordable because we're direct.

Nice sales pitch. I hope folks who view this site regularly are able to decipher facts from sales bs.
