Mordaunt-Short Finds Shrink Machine

Keeping busy this summer with the new Avant floorstanders, speaker company Mordaunt-Short has also introduced another new line. The "Alumni" range is a surround package made up of compact speakers and due out next month. The set will consist of a four satellite speakers (Alumni 2), a center channel (Alumni 5), and a subwoofer (Alumni 9). All speakers in the line use the company's unique continuous profile cones which eliminate the need for a dust cap. The Alumni 2 speakers use a 3.5" cone with a 1" tweeter and a curved cabinet to reduce standing waves, while the Alumni 5 uses the same curved cabinet and two of the 3.5" cones side by side. The Alumni 9 subwoofer uses an 8" cone and a down-firing port with 120 watts to keep it moving. The full 5.1 set-up retails for just under $1200 and the company has also announced that it will release an LCR speaker called the Alumni 3 later this year for just over $500.
