Goldmund's Point of Reference

July 12, 2007 by JD Mattioli

It has been 25 years since the release of Goldmund's Reference turntable and this spring Goldmund announced that the re-issue, "Reference II," is opened for pre-order. Manufacturing exactly one unit for each year since the original turntable was introduced (get out your calculators) there will be only 25 of the new model available. It should be mentioned that the asking price for the new Reference II is 300,000 US dollars thus making the limited edition turntable even more exclusive. Goldmund also announced their plans for the PH8 Phono Preamplifier, made for use only with the Reference II and also in a limited edition of 25; it will be available later this year.

The Reference II platter is made of 5 layers (three metracrylate and two brass) and weighs 44lbs. It is spun by a cog-free motor designed for minimal noise and uses the new T8 straight-line tone arm. The Reference II output uses the "Swiss Chrono," for 96kHz and 24-bit D/A.
