Fake Vacuum Tube Silliness Continues

January 27, 2010 by Dave Kay

For reasons that escape me, there are still several companies out there making terrible products based on fake vacuum tubes. The latest in this failure pile comes from Japan, and is called the "UMAZONe". (Um-azon-e? U-mazon-e? Uma-zon-e? Who knows?) The Brando Tube Delight fake tube/soundcard was a dumb idea, but the U-whatever takes things to a new level by being a fake tube amplifier/speaker.

Inside the Uma-thing is a 1.5" speaker with nearly half a watt of power, which connects to a computer via USB. The blue LED lights inside the "tubes" are said to flash along with the music. If you want one, the price is around $25. Perhaps the best thing about the UMAZONe is this translated sentence from the product info.

"A major feature, a vacuum tube amplifier design for wind. The TOP PANEL "tube" that mimics the group with four LED lights. Listening to music is a blue LED that flashes. The two front-mounted USB 2.0 terminal system. Prepare for the volume knob." Prepare for the volume knob indeed.
