Stephen Colbert's MP3 Player is Filled with Truth

If walking around with an iPod or something from Korea just doesn't fill you with enough American pride, you may want to consider the new Zvue Spirit. The Spirit comes in a decorative tin featuring artwork of a flag waving child, and is decorated with the stars and stripes. Even the navigation pad is shaped like a star. It's surprisingly small (and light) for something so intrinsically American, measuring just 2" H x 1 3/8" W x 3/5" D, with 1GB storage capacity a 1" monochrome screen. It has no problem guzzling energy though; battery life is rated at just 6 hours. The Spirit comes with 15 patriotic tracks from the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Night Ranger pre-loaded. Sadly, the Colbert Report screaming eagle intro is not included. The Spirit is priced at $36 and is probably made in China, but don't think about that.

Here it is:

Unislan VP808

I bought one when I was in Shanghai last month. Not the Spirit, mind you, the actual VP808. 1GB player (also acts as a memory device via the standard mini-USB connector), plays MP3/AAC/WMA/WAV. FM radio included, 7 EQ presets, 10 languages, etc. Takes 3 hours to fully charge from a USB port, runs for exactly 6 hours before it dies.

Nice things: REALLY tiny, easy to operate, strong/bright screen, a REAL 3.5mm headphone jack (not the harder-to-find 2.5mm unit used on smart phones and the like), USB direct interface (drag and drop songs from your HDD to the device - it auto-finds the songs, don't need a "loader" application), good battery life, good sound quality.

Bad things: 6 hours run time is a bit short, and the buttons aren't exactly intuitive.

Overall, it was worth the 100 RMB I paid in the Xiajuihui electronics mall (that's about $14 USD).
