Pass Labs has announced the SR1, their newest floorstanding four-way loudspeaker that uses the "mass controlled piston model" in which the speaker's radiating surface behaves as a rigid surface.

"The trick to making it work is to find a perfect piston driver. The cone surface must maintain its shape over the frequency band without breaking up into resonant vibrational modes. The suspension and motor system must remain linear with high excursion. Most speakers, however, allow the cone to flex in a way that gives some extension at higher frequencies at the cost of an irregular response in the frequency response and phase performance." - Pass Labs

One enclosures houses the 10" and 8" Nextel-coated cone drivers and a second smaller enclosure houses the midrange and SEAS Crescendo tweeter. The SR1 is available as a bi-amplified or quad-amplified system with active crossover filters, and other upgrades are available. Impedance stays above 4 ohms and the sensitivity rating is 90dB @ 2.8V.

The Pass Labs SR1 is currently available from dealers with an MSRP of $25,000.

You know this is a great speaker. At $25,000, it does make you appreciate the DIY approach a bit more, though.

Seeing what they used as drivers, Im really proud of my creation. You can imagine how much mark up there is on speakers. They are actually using Seas drivers which are similar to what I used in my project. And yes, you do appreciate the DIY approach.

You can see them here
